Hello all,
Adam LaMotte here. Long time listener, first time caller. Here are three new pieces that I've made in the last few months...

What I got here is a watercolor illustration of what it felt like to read Voltaire's Candide. 'Nuff said.

This one is my first painting with acrylic. It's based on a photo of Rara Lake, in Nepal. By no design of my own, this piece can now be found floating its way down the Hudson River.

I started this one with the smoke/chemicals on the left, and had no idea what it was going to turn into. After making the pipes is when I realized it was definitely going to be a factory.

  1. AAAAAADAAAAMMMM!!!!!

a.) please tell me you are referencing dr. horrible in your first line (if you don't know what i'm talking about don't worry about it)

b.) lol i read candide and i think when i was reading it it just felt very chaotic, lots of rape, and random bad things happening, eldorado was a brief golden patch but otherwise it was pretty chaotic. your take is pretty interesting with the tree, and i feel like blackness coming from behind the tree is my take of candide coming out.

c.) yeah that's right, you just got critiqued.

d.) my favorite is the third one. its psychedelic, and there seem to be so many layers to it. i honestly feel like i couldn't do something that awesome if i tried. for example, i JUST noticedthe cool colorful pipes in the background on the right side.

e.) the contrast on the rails is really good in the second one.

f.) there is no f. i guess f stands for feel, you make me feel like you are an artist and i, a mere doodler.

  2. p.s. i like that you have an established style and that you always had, e.g. the many colors and kindof tie-dye ish quality as well as the surreal subjects.

  3. Yes, this is super Adam-style.
First off, I loved Candide. I felt bad, but ficking laughed my ass off the whole time. If you're anything like me, maybe the fruit represents your joy and laughter and the black is your darkdark soul which is black for laughing and rape and syphilis jokes.

I love the second painting. When I heard it was of a place in Nepal I was like "Why the fuck is he in Nepal?" But now I'm like "What the fuck does he mean it's in the Hudson River?" I already told you what particular stuff I love about it on facebook. But do you remember that haiku we read a long time ago in Morgan's class by Mao Zhedong wrote about mountains, and either me or you said Mao Zhedong has a hard on for mountains?
I have a hard on for those mountains.

And your third one is so Adamish. I am going to quote what I said on facebook cause I think I am pretty goddamned clever.

"If Van Gogh fucked Matisse and they had a baby, and then that baby fucked Mondrian, and they had a baby, that baby would be you."

The sky is your Van Gogh, the colors and buildings are Matisse and the ground is Mondrian.

Seriously. The third one out-does anything I have seen here at art school. Except possibly really realistic painting I saw of Obama and Michael Jordan riding a huge dog. That was pretty rad. But besides that, this is the best.

The last one makes me think of the raddest pollution ever.

  4. Allison!-
My first line was just referencing what a lot of people say when they call in to a radio show. Yeah, the chaotic part of the picture definitely correlates with most of what happened in Candide. But with the tree, I was kind of showing the ideal "best of possible worlds" they are searching for. With the end, and all that "we must cultivate our garden" stuff, I figured a tree would be a good rep because it is built from underground, with the roots and everything, and just like, the peace comes from within, not from grabbing the apple from the outside. Yeah, the third one is my favorite as well, but it is far from a 30-min doodle. I kept coming back to it and adding things for about a month. The stairs and those colored pipes took forever.
    Thanks!

    Dakota!-
You're supposed to laugh at Candide. Thanks for saying my Rara Lake painting would do well at your snooty-scarf-wearing art school. To unravel the mystery about that, I made that painting for my Nepalese (now former) girlfriend, which in an exorcism of all things Adam, she angrily threw into the Hudson River...
I do remember that Haiku, and I do remember the Mao Zhedong mountain-hard-on comment! (But I'm pretty sure that YOU said that. Just think about it...) I did get your reference with the painters, and it WAS really clever. But for some reason, from the way you said it, I imagined the Van Gogh/Matisse baby fucking Mondrian AS A BABY (is that just me?). Now I want to see that painting of Obama and Jordan riding that dog.
    Thanks!

    -Adam

P.S. This makes me want to submit more often.

  5. Sorry about the ex-girlfriend. Also sorry that when I heard about her Adam exorcism into the Hudson river the first thing I thought was "LITTER!"

Sorry for the baby fucking comment. You know how I roll.

Submit more often. They don't have to be as cool as these. Our stuff certainly isn't. I post whatever little thing I have no matter how shitty.

  8. Dakota-
Thanks, and don't worry, "Litter!" is actually one of the first things I thought about it. But it's no doubt the coolest of the litter, and maybe someone will find it and hang it on their wall, or at least put it in a proper waste receptacle...

    Rachael-
Thanks, and so am I, so. am. I. I'm excited to see you again when I come home.
