Space CIty Video

This song covers the operation of the goods. My grandpa made 8mm video from its own spacecraft. Translation party is awesome. This is my cover of a drive-by truckers song, "Space City." I made this video for it using footage of rocket boosters falling back to earth and short videos I made of my grandpa's old 8mm projector. For the best viewing, I recommend full screen and headphones. Hope you guys like it!

  1. Adam, this is so beautiful. I particularly love the layering of images from the 8mm projector; the obvious age of the film gives it a very pointed emotional resonance. I'd love to hear the story behind the pictures.

  2. Oh my god Adam, what the fuck? This footage is amazing! I don't even know what to say, I spent half of it thinking "How the fuck did he do that part." The end totally killed me. What editing program did you use? I kinda want a shot by shot explanation. The part at 3:50, I was in such a trance I thought "What kind of cells are those." But really, was that shot edited by making it mirrored 3 times in imovie or some other editing program. It just works so well. Wow.

Also, that song, I've never heard it before. I love it.

  3. Thanks guys! Yeah, it was much less work than you probably give me credit for Dakota. I basically used a lot from this video of a shuttle booster falling back to earth, and the rest of it came from short videos I made of the 8mm projector. The films were shot by my grandpa, many in the 50's and early 60's, and my family found the projector and films at his house recently.

What may seem like great editing is actually just some luck; I found a film that was labeled "Hong Kong Trip, Double Exposure," the layering of which gave it an immediate beauty. I wanted to shoot the projections in different ways that would parallel with the spacescape. I filmed from where the image was being projected at the projector to make it similar to the sunlight. I also filmed the image from the side of the wall to try to make it seem like the earth's surface. Oh and the jellyfish looking things at 3:50 are just the parachutes of the booster falling back to earth, no editing necessary for that.

  4. adam i forgot to comment but i thought this was really cool. it took me a while to realize what was going on but once i got it i thought it was really genius. the projector cuts to the booster was so well done.

whatever you say about it being easy and not a lot of editing done, the end product is beautiful. i was watching it at a friends house and a few people stopped behind me to watch.

also nice cover. sorry i can't comment more but i want to express that i thought this was really cool and very original.
